Camp Berry in South Portland, Maine. From his memoirs, which he related to my great-aunt before he passed away of old age, we learned that he fought with the 8th Maine Regiment during the Civil War. His memories led me on a journey through the South many years ago, where I visited several battlegrounds and searched through many military libraries for books that would corroborate his stories. As it turned out, he remembered it all very well. The battles that he spoke of really did happen, as did so many of the other hardships that he and the other men faced. I named my oldest son after him.
