Celebrity Chix

These girls lay white eggs, so they're the stars this week of Easter egg decorating!
(Well, except for the buff photo-bomber in the back.)
Pretty Boy on the left wanted me to let you know that he's important too. He makes sure that we all wake up in the morning! I assured him that yes, that IS an important job.

More Bantys!

Yesterday afternoon we discovered a surprise when we visited the chicken coop - one of our bantam hens hatched out 5 chicks!  This is one of the hens that my step-daughter won at auction, so you can just imagine how excited and proud she is right now!!

Young Layers

Our young hens have just started laying so their egg sizes are all over the board from really small, to really big...one of the boys told me that he hopes they calibrate their systems pretty soon because laying those over-sized eggs must hurt!

The Cutest Egg

One of the girls was thrilled to find this cute little egg in the nest this morning, and she couldn't wait to eat it. I had to snap this picture fast 'cause she already had the frying pan warming up!  (For those who are wondering, it contained mostly whites, with just a little yolk swirled inside.)

Camo Boy

Camo Boy (a Golden Polish cockerel) always seems to enjoy his time with the kiddos!

Pretty Bird

Just like a pirate walks around with a parrot on her shoulder, she has taught her little Silkie hen to ride around on hers!

So much color!

Tomorrow is Easter, so tonight they have been busily decorating eggs.  It's so hard to pick a favorite because they are all so pretty!

Good-bye Scrappy

One of my favorite breeds of chicken is the Bantam Sumatra. The roosters' overly long, black (but luminescent) feathers gleam with all the colors of the rainbow as they wander around the yard. My rooster, Scrappy, was the oldest chicken in the yard. I've lost count of how many years that I have enjoyed his company. Today he passed away. He had survived so many different things over the years that I had kinda hoped he would live forever. A special thanks to my husband for taking care of him before I got home. I'm not sure I could have handled it. I'm not ashamed to admit that I had many conversations with this old bird. He was a great addition to my farm. Happy trails, ol' man. You were a beautiful boy, and we (Your family & all your 'girls'!) will miss you.

Farm Girlz

Remember last year's chix? They have turned into great, big, beautiful, hard-working layers! The girls have done a good job handling them, so they are also friendly and they seem to enjoy being handled. Although not for too long!
